For the first time, candidates for the presidency of Moldova will be tested for knowledge of the state language. The CEC has approved a new regulation requiring candidates to demonstrate proficiency in their native language.

For the first time, candidates for the presidency of the Republic of Moldova will be tested for knowledge of the state language. The elections will be held on October 20. This was reported by Point, according to UNN.

According to a new regulation approved by the Central Election Commission (CEC), candidates' Romanian language skills will be checked by the admission committee when submitting documents for registration of initiative groups.

According to the publication, each candidate will be required to personally fill out a declaration and answer questions from members of the selection committee. This is necessary to demonstrate their language skills.

According to Article 18 of the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, candidates need to demonstrate the following levels of proficiency in the state language:

  • sufficient understanding of the common language and official information;
  • ability to discuss and answer questions about everyday life;
  • ability to read and understand texts of a public nature, laws and regulations;
  • ability to write essays on topics related to everyday life.
