Details

The incident occurred on Wednesday in the state of Bolivar, which borders Brazil. The miners were buried when a landslide occurred in the mine, authorities said on Sunday.

The area is rich in gold deposits, but the mines are often operated with little regard for safety. In November, local non-governmental organization SOS Orinoco reported an accident in the same mine.

Venezuelan authorities say they will take care of the victims and and will organize the transportation of the dead.

According to the newspaper, mines prone to accidents operate almost without government oversight, although the government often processes gold into bullion for for its own use.
