Due to the lack of space in Dutch prisons, prisoners will be released 3 days ahead of schedule. Exceptions are persons serving up to 7 days and those who have been imposed a preventive measure.

The Dutch government said that all prisons and police stations no longer have room to accommodate new arrestees and detainees. The situation is so catastrophic that they decided to send the detainees home three days ahead of schedule. This is reported on the website of the Dutch government, UNN reports.

The Secretary of State for Justice and Security Ingrid Coenrady said that sending prisoners home 3 days before the end of their sentence is inevitable.

This is the only way to continue to house detainees and offenders. And that is the most important thing to me. If you have committed a crime or are suspected of committing a crime, you will be arrested and detained. This is crucial to our rule of law,

- She said.

Coenrady said that she has made every effort to prevent prison overcrowding and has been looking for additional ways to solve this problem, but that there are no other options at the moment.

As a result, detainees will be allowed to leave prison 3 days earlier to make room for new offenders.

Everyone is eligible for early release, except for prisoners with sentences of up to 7 days and prisoners who were subsequently imposed a preventive measure of arrest for a certain period of time. This measure is temporary and is applied for as short a time as possible to as few detainees as possible,

- the statement said.

At the same time, the government believes that the number of days for which detainees will be allowed to be released earlier will soon increase.
