A live video broadcast by local media shows people taking large paintings out of the building to save them from the fire.

The historic building, whose spire was shaped like the intertwined tails of four dragons, was undergoing reconstruction when the fire broke out.

The Dutch Renaissance building no longer houses the Danish Stock Exchange, but is now the headquarters of the Danish Chamber of Commerce.

"We were greeted by a horrific sight. The exchange is on fire," wrote the X Chamber of Commerce.

Copenhagen police asked people to avoid driving in the inner part of the city.
