Hungarian government canceled subsidies for refugees from Transcarpathia and other western regions of Ukraine
Kyiv • UNN
The Hungarian government has changed its refugee assistance system to exclude Transcarpathia and other western regions of Ukraine. Many Transcarpathians, including Roma with dual citizenship, may be evicted from shelters.
A decree has come into force in Hungary, according to which Transcarpathians will be excluded from the refugee subsidy program at the end of August. UNN writes about this with reference to the local edition Telex.
Details
On August 20, Hungary stopped providing support to some Ukrainian refugees after the government made changes to the assistance system in its summer decree.
From now on, only certain regions of Ukraine will be eligible for state aid in Hungary. In the decree, the government introduced a new concept, the so-called war zone, which covers "administrative units of Ukraine directly affected by military operations." This will exclude refugees from western Ukraine and Transcarpathia from the Hungarian state refugee assistance system.
From the moment the resolution came into force, those who were excluded under the amendment had less than 10 days to appeal. Some of them filed an appeal, although they were still denied, and many were unaware of the deadline.
Due to the changes, many Transcarpathians, including Roma with dual citizenship of Ukraine and Hungary, may be evicted from their shelters.
According to the report, on August 20 in Ercea, 110 Transcarpathian Roma were forced to leave the building of a sugar factory housing complex where they had been living for two years. In Erd, 52 Transcarpathian refugees suffered the same fate, and other refugees from Ukraine across the country are in the same situation.
The newspaper writes that the termination of support for asylum seekers does not mean that they have to leave the country, if only because most of them have dual citizenship. This is partly an obstacle to continuing support. Some people tried to go to Germany in the first few weeks, but were advised to leave precisely because of their Hungarian citizenship, saying that they could not be considered Ukrainian refugees and should receive assistance from Hungary.
Recall
russia is planning new propaganda operations in Europe aimed at Ukrainian refugees. The goal is to persuade people who fled Ukraine because of the war not to return, according to the GUR.
