Six units of the russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant are approaching the end of their fuel life, entering uncharted territory as no one has ever exceeded this timeframe before, raising safety concerns.

All six power units at the russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant are reaching the end of their nuclear fuel lifetime. The head of Energoatom, Petro Kotin, said during a telethon that with the expiration of these terms, we are entering uncharted territory, because no one has ever exceeded these terms, UNN reports .

Indeed, this is one of the problems that has been added recently. Some of the fuel has a lifetime of more than 6 years. We are entering an unknown territory, where no one has been before, because no one has exceeded this period in nuclear reactors anywhere before. And the fuel producer today must conduct appropriate safety analyses, appropriate examination of this fuel. After that, it will be possible to say what can be done with it. It may still be suitable for further operation, but it needs to be checked completely

- Kotin noted.

He emphasized that such an inspection should be carried out by competent representatives of fuel producers, but that such an inspection is currently impossible because there is no access to fuel.
