In Venezuela, as a result of two consecutive earthquakes, at least 32 people have died and at least 700 have been injured, according to acting President Delcy Rodríguez, UNN reports, citing the BBC.

"At least 32 people died as a result of the earthquake and about 700 were injured," according to Rodríguez.

These are the first casualty figures she has released. 

The U.S. Geological Survey earlier estimated a 44% probability of more than 10,000 deaths and a 30% probability of more than 100,000 deaths.

The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2, and the second, which occurred less than a minute later, was stronger, at 7.5.

Venezuela was celebrating a national holiday, and many people were at home when the earthquakes struck at 6:04 p.m. local time.

The earthquakes occurred in an area west of Caracas and could be felt across the country and as far as Bogotá, Colombia.

It is reported that buildings have been destroyed throughout Caracas.
