Donor liver was delivered by helicopter: Shalimov Institute tells how posthumous donation saved three lives

The relatives of the woman from Bukovyna agreed to the posthumous donation of her organs. Two kidneys were transplanted in Chernivtsi and Lviv, and the liver was helicoptered to Kyiv for transplantation at the Shalimov Institute.
Three lives were saved by a woman from Bukovyna whose relatives agreed to posthumous organ donation. The National Scientific Center of Surgery and Transplantation named after O.O. Shalimov told how they managed to deliver a donor liver to Kyiv and what transplants were performed by colleagues from Chernivtsi and Lviv, UNN reports.
"One kidney was transplanted at the Chernivtsi Regional Clinical Hospital, the other at the First Medical Association of Lviv.
The donor liver, accompanied by a team of our doctors, was delivered to the Center by helicopter, which allowed for a timely transplant, as the liver can be transplanted no more than 8 hours after the organ was taken," the statement said.
The medical institution reminded that transplantation is always a complex medical and organizational process, the positive outcome of which is possible thanks to the clear actions of everyone involved.
"We express our gratitude to the National Police of Ukraine and the Aviation Support Center of the National Police of Ukraine for their assistance in organizing the delivery of the donor organ. Without your help, this transplant would not have been possible.

Separately, the Shalimov Institute thanked the donor's family, who decided to give other people a chance to be saved.
