Local government chairman Yahaya Yari, during the funeral of the victims, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and stop the wave of violence. In early June alone, in another district of Zamfara State, militants killed 17 farmers and wounded at least 13 others.
According to the UN, thousands of people have died and millions have been forced to flee their homes during the years of armed conflict in northern Nigeria. The region is plagued by armed gangs involved in kidnappings, attacks on farming communities, and illegal mining.
