Archaeologists have excavated an elite female tomb on the coast of Peru that is five thousand years old.

Archaeologists in the coastal region of Peru have discovered the remains of a 5,000-year-old woman who may have belonged to the upper echelons of the ancient Caral civilization. The discovery indicates the importance of women in the ancient culture of local residents. This is reported by UNN with reference to Reuters.

Details

Caral, located approximately 180 km from Lima on the Pacific coast, is considered the oldest city in the Americas and was inhabited at the same time as the ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Sumerian civilizations, although unlike them, researchers say, this city developed in complete isolation.

Aspero, the territory in Caral where the tomb was found, was previously used as a city dump.

This is an important find, and the artifacts found correspond to a woman of high status. The tomb was surrounded by baskets of offerings, vases, pumpkins, and a toucan's beak. And the body of the woman, who died at the age of about 20 to 35, was found with a mantle of blue and brown feathers, originating, perhaps, from Amazonian birds, such as macaws

— explained archaeologist David Palomino, pointing to the way the body was wrapped and the preservation of the buried woman's skin, hair, and nails.

He also noted that the find suggests that "not only men had an important status in this ancient civilization, women also played an important role in it."

Although researchers do not know the exact date of the burial, the Caral civilization was active around 3000 BC.
