At the summit in Budapest, European leaders discussed major security challenges and Europe's future role on the world stage, especially in the context of the change of power in the United States and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, called for unity and responsibility, emphasizing that Europeans must determine their own destiny by defending the rule of law in the face of challenges from autocratic regimes.
French President Emmanuel Macron supported this call, emphasizing the need for greater EU autonomy in security and strategy. According to him, Europe should not rely entirely on the United States, but should formulate its own security policy. President of the European Council Charles Michel also added that the EU should strengthen its economic and political position by building a partnership rather than a dependent relationship with the United States.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who also attended the summit, emphasized the importance of maintaining strong support between Europe and America, which is key to the stability of the region. At the same time, he emphasized that peace with a terrorist state is possible only through strength and countering aggression.
