The US is considering extending a sanctions waiver for maritime operations involving Russian oil. This decision aims to curb a sharp rise in fuel prices.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is likely to extend the waiver that allows certain countries to purchase sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products in the near future. This is reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

This refers to a 30-day mechanism, introduced in mid-March, which allows transactions with Russian oil at sea. Its validity expires on April 11.

According to the agency's sources, a decision to extend the waiver may be made in the near future to avoid a sharp rise in energy prices amid the war between the US and Iran.

One source said that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the issue with Donald Trump at the White House, and the parties concluded that extending the waiver was appropriate. The White House and the Treasury Department have not officially commented on this data.

Earlier, Russian President's special representative Kirill Dmitriev stated that such a step could free up to 100 million barrels of Russian oil – which is approximately equivalent to daily global production.

At the same time, a possible extension of the waiver could cause tension between the US and its allies. The European Union has already stated that now is not the time to ease sanctions against Russia.

In particular, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the need to maintain sanctions pressure.
