The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has kept three Ukrainian sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, writes UNN.
During the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Busan (Republic of Korea), the Committee unanimously adopted a decision to keep three Ukrainian sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger
The decision recognizes that the ongoing armed aggression of the russian federation continues to pose a direct threat to their outstanding universal value, authenticity, and integrity.
Among these sites are:
- "Saint Sophia Cathedral, related monastic buildings, and Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra";
- "Historic Centre of Lviv";
- "Historic Centre of Odesa".
During the review of the Ukrainian sites, the Committee took into account updated information provided by Ukraine regarding damage caused by recent Russian missile and drone attacks on cultural heritage sites in Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa, as well as the results of reactive monitoring missions by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS, which were an important component in assessing the current state of preservation of these sites.
The ministry emphasized that the decision has important political significance.
The importance of these decisions lies, in particular, in identifying the cause of the threat to the sites – the full-scale invasion of the russian federation into Ukraine, as well as in condemning the ongoing full-scale aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine
It is noted that the Committee once again called on the russian federation to refrain from any actions that could cause direct or indirect damage to the sites and Ukraine's cultural heritage in general. At the same time, Ukraine's protection, monitoring, and preservation of the sites under wartime conditions were positively noted.
The Committee's decisions provide for the continuation of international monitoring of the state of preservation of Ukrainian World Heritage sites, further cooperation between Ukraine and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and Advisory Bodies, the World Heritage Committee, as well as the preparation of updated information on the implementation of these decisions for consideration at the next session of the Committee in 2027, the MFA emphasizes.
