Ukraine is in a significantly stronger position today than a year ago, while the Russian economy is increasingly feeling the effects of sanctions pressure. This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen ahead of the G7 summit, UNN reports.

According to her, the G7 leaders will discuss further support for Ukraine and the financing of its needs in the coming days.
"Last year, the situation for Ukraine was much more difficult. Today, Ukraine is holding the front line and even partially reclaiming territories. It has developed capabilities for strikes against strategic targets deep inside Russia and has become one of the world leaders in the production of modern military equipment," von der Leyen stated.
She emphasized that the European Union continues to provide large-scale assistance to Kyiv.
According to the President of the European Commission, the 90 billion euro credit support package covers about two-thirds of Ukraine's financial needs for the current and next years, with the first payments expected as early as this month.
"On the other hand, Russia is feeling increasing pressure. Our sanctions are working and dealing a tangible blow. Putin's war economy has never been so weak," she noted.
Von der Leyen also announced that the EU has officially opened the first negotiation cluster regarding Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
"Ukraine has made significant progress in reforms. It has done its part of the work. Now it is our turn to do ours," the President of the European Commission concluded.
