U.S. President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of reducing the military presence not only in Germany, but also in Italy and Spain. He stated this during a briefing at the White House, UNN reports.
Details
According to Trump, the reason for this decision is the refusal of NATO countries to participate in the war of the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
"Italy didn't help us with anything. Spain was terrible. Absolutely terrible. NATO too. It's one thing when they say something nice: 'We will help, but slowly.' They were involved with Ukraine and created complete discord there. Complete chaos. We helped them with Ukraine, even though we are an ocean away from Ukraine... But when we needed them, they weren't there,"
At the same time, he added that the allies are "not needed by the U.S." in the war against Iran.
"I told them: 'We don't need your help, but we wouldn't turn down help,' and I wanted to see if they would do anything," Trump added.
Context
The day before, Donald Trump stated that his administration is considering the possibility of reducing the American military contingent in Germany.
In turn, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for a "reliable transatlantic partnership," without directly responding to the U.S. President's comments regarding the troop reduction.
Later, Trump responded to Merz, noting that he should pay more attention to ending the war in Ukraine and interfere less in the affairs of those who are ridding the world of the nuclear threat from Iran.
