Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reacted to a recent statement by US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, in which he accused the country of not adequately protecting Greenland. This is reported by AFP, writes UNN.

Details

"For many years we have supported the Americans in very difficult situations," she said, referring to Denmark's fighting alongside American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The Vice President's reference to Denmark is incorrect," she said, expressing her readiness to "cooperate day and night with the Americans" on security issues in the Arctic.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also criticised the US for its "tone" after Vice President Jay Dee Vance visited Greenland, a remote and resource-rich Arctic island that President Donald Trump dreams of, Bloomberg writes.

In response to Vance's remarks, Rasmussen called for an end to such messages from Washington.

"Of course, we are open to criticism," Rasmussen said in a three-minute video posted on social media on Friday evening. - But let me be absolutely honest: we don't like the tone in which it is expressed... it's not how you talk to your close allies."

Rasmussen said Denmark respects the US position that it needs a greater military presence in Greenland. He added that the US once had 17 military facilities and thousands of troops stationed there; Pituffik Space Base, which Vance visited, is the outpost that remains.

"We - Denmark and Greenland - are very open to discussing this with you, openly," Rasmussen said. He added that Greenland is also part of NATO and is covered by NATO security guarantees.

Earlier

Vice President Jay Dee Vance said that Denmark "has not done its job in the interests of the people of Greenland" and that the territory would be better off "under the US security umbrella than under the Danish security umbrella".

Recall

Earlier, UNN wrote that US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, during a visit to Greenland, said that the country is an important part of the security of not only the United States, but also the entire world. He also noted that, according to Trump, the US needs to have a stronger position in Greenland.
