4A Games will release Metro 2039 this winter on PC and consoles. The game features a new hero, the Stranger, and a plot changed under the influence of the war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian company 4A Games, together with Deep Silver, officially announced Metro 2039 and released a trailer for the game, which is expected to be released in winter, UNN reports.

Metro 2039 is another iconic first-person shooter developed by the renowned 4A Games studio. Embark on a journey into the dark heart of post-apocalyptic Moscow for a fierce battle for the soul of the Metro

- reads the description under the video.

As stated at the beginning of the trailer, the game was "produced with pride in Ukraine based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's famous trilogy." The trailer introduces a new main character who replaces Artyom, as well as a new faction, the "Novoreich."

The player will take on the role of The Stranger - a recluse haunted by brutal nightmares. He is forced to return to the metro - a place he swore never to return to.

The destruction we brought upon ourselves turned out to be absolute. Heaven, hell, and purgatory were torn to atoms. So, when the soul leaves the body, it has nowhere to go, and it must remain here, in the Metro

- the video says.

Co-Creative Director and Lead Audio Designer at 4A Games, Pavlo Ulmer, noted: "Metro 2039 will take you into the dark heart of the Moscow Metro, where the last survivors after the nuclear apocalypse fight for life in the tunnels and underpasses of the ruined city. Hope is lost. The future, if there is one, looks bleak."

Andriy Shevchenko, the studio's creative director, spoke about the new faction: "Underground factions and station communities, all united under one banner - the 'Novoreich.' They are led by a new Führer - the legendary Spartan 'Hunter.' The Führer promises salvation and a new life on the surface, but in reality, the communities remain trapped deep in the metro, flooded with propaganda and disinformation, suffering under the oppression of his authoritarian regime."

People suffer under an authoritarian regime. They are convinced that everything hostile must be killed. Our games explore what people were like before the end of the world, what they became after it, and what they are willing to do to live another day. Our focus has always been on preventing war, but war has become a reality for us, so now we want to talk about its consequences. The cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom. You will explore these themes with our main character. We must return to the metro because we want to tell a story. This time, the atmosphere will be much darker. This is a handcrafted, story-driven, single-player campaign where you will feel the weight of a decaying world pressing down on you and forcing you into your own claustrophobic nightmares.

- the developers note.

They emphasize that they do not romanticize the apocalypse or turn it into an amusement park, and "the Metro universe has always offered a rather tragic view of humanity's actions."

Now tragedy has come to us. All plans for the next chapter of Metro changed in 2020, and then changed even more in 2022. When the full-scale invasion of Russia began, the lives of all members of our team changed, especially those living in Ukraine. The war changed us, and we changed the plot and paid more attention to the choices of the characters, the consequences of their actions, to show the price they pay for the future. Reality forced us to choose a new approach, to show the story through the experience of Ukrainians. But it is still the Metro universe and a story about Metro

- the developers add.

The developers also emphasized: "We are a team of fighters. We are of Cossack lineage. We will break through despite everything. Working on generators or batteries, power outages, or hiding in shelters from missile and drone attacks interrupt our process, but do not stop us from creating what we deeply believe in and what we do best."

Of course, family care is the top priority. Sometimes you just dive headfirst into work, but it is mutual support that gives you the strength to move forward. If we need to add a new feature or implement something in a specific way, we just do it in our own engine. We are limited only by our imagination. We have the opportunity to use the advantages of every previous game in the franchise. In Metro Exodus, our engine allowed us to pioneer ray tracing technology. This time, we focused on completely rebuilding the implementation of this technology to provide a more balanced and productive experience.

- Ulmer noted.

The trailer indicates that the game will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic Games this winter.

Additions

The Metro game series was created by 4A Games Limited, founded by former employees of the game studio GSC Game World, which created the equally legendary "Stalker" game series. In 2010, the first game in the Metro 2033 series was released. The game's plot generally follows Dmitry Glukhovsky's book, and the events unfold in Moscow 20 years after a global nuclear war. The surviving citizens found refuge in the Moscow subway. The main character of the game, Artyom, sets out to complete a mission to save his home from mutant attacks.

In 2014, the sequel to the game, "Metro: Last Light," was released, with events taking place a few months after the end of "Metro 2033," when Artyom destroyed the lair of the Black mutants.

After the common enemy of the inhabitants of the post-apocalyptic metro was gone, a civil war brewed between them. Artyom gets a chance to enlist the help of a surviving Black and prevent the conquering plans of the "Red Line."

In 2019, the sequel "Metro Exodus" was released, which completely changes the nature of the game. In the previous two parts, the main character Artyom rarely went to the surface, and all events unfolded in the subway and in Moscow. Artyom, with a group of surviving rangers of the "Sparta" order, discover that there are also survivors outside Moscow after the war. They leave the capital on the "Aurora" train and travel far to the east to find a new place.

The game's plot unfolds not in the metro, but in the ruined cities of Russia. Here you can see the Yamantau mountains, the cities of Novosibirsk, Magnitogorsk, etc., destroyed by a nuclear strike.

As in previous series, the game has two endings: good and bad. In the "Good Ending," the main character Artyom survives and leads a team of survivors who settle on Lake Baikal - a place not contaminated with radiation.

In the "Bad Ending," Artyom dies from radiation.
