Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered a direct strike against Israel in response to the assassination of one of Hamas' leaders Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, The New York Times reports, citing three sources, UNN reports.

According to the publication, on the morning of July 31, Ali Khamenei held an extraordinary meeting of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran. The Ayatollah gave the order to strike Israel at this meeting. The newspaper cites three sources, including two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Their names are not given because they are not authorized to speak publicly.
It is not known what the retaliatory strike will be. NYT sources suggest that the Iranian military may strike with drones and missiles at military facilities in the Tel Aviv and Haifa area.
