Ukrainian intelligence has published data on the portal War&Sanctions regarding the new Russian "Geran-4" drone, which began to be used against Ukraine in May of this year. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, according to UNN.
Details
It is noted that Russia began using this drone as a countermeasure against the effectiveness of our interceptor UAVs.
As part of the final preparations for the serial production of the drone, i.e., by January 2026, the first test launches were carried out from the "Primorsk" drone port in the Orel region of Russia, and from the territory of the former Donetsk airport.
In May 2024, the enemy began their combat use for strikes on the territory of Ukraine.
To manufacture previous versions of the "Geran-3" jet UAVs, the enemy used the airframe of the gasoline-powered "Geran-2". However, such experience showed that its strength was insufficient for flights at high speeds, and even more so for maneuvering with high G-loads.
Therefore, the "Geran-4" jet UAV has its own new airframe with improved aerodynamic quality, a reinforced structure, and a turbojet engine with increased thrust. The wings are now non-detachable from the center section. To reduce air resistance, the number of technological hatches on the fuselage has been decreased.
In total, the use of two types of turbojet engines was recorded as part of the "Geran-4" UAV: the discontinued Chinese Telefly LX-WP-160 engine (with 160 kg/1600N thrust) and a Chinese engine already encountered on the "Geran-5" UAV – the Telefly TF-TJ2000A (with 200 kgf/1960 N thrust).
The new "Geran-4" airframe allows for active maneuvers at speeds from 300 to 400 km/h, and its reinforced structure allows it to withstand significant G-loads. Thanks to this, the "Geran-4" can reach speeds of up to 500 km/h and a flight altitude of up to 5,000 meters. The UAV is capable of carrying a high-explosive fragmentation/thermobaric OFZBCH-50/TBBCH-50M (50 kg) or an enlarged thermobaric TBBCH-90 (90 kg) warhead to a distance of up to 450 kilometers.
The onboard control system and its electronic component base are identical to previously known UAVs produced by JSC "SEZ PPT Alabuga".
The dimensions of the new "Geran-4" airframe have not changed and remain a standard 3.5 meters in length and 3 meters in width (wingspan).
