The Kremlin is spreading AI-generated videos about separatism in the strategic port of Klaipėda. The campaign's goal is to destabilize Lithuania and undermine trust in NATO.

Russia has launched a disinformation campaign about alleged "separatism" in Lithuania, promoting fake narratives about the "Klaipėda People's Republic." This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (CPD), informs UNN.

Details

It is noted that the Department of State Security of Lithuania, on social networks, particularly on TikTok, is spreading AI-generated videos claiming that Klaipėda allegedly "belongs to Russia."

In reality, there are no separatist movements in the Klaipėda region. The region has become a target of Kremlin information attacks because it is strategically important for Lithuania. It hosts a key seaport and an LNG terminal, which allowed the country to completely abandon Russian gas.

- the message says.

It is indicated that the imitation of separatist sentiments is a classic element of Russia's hybrid warfare.

Similar information operations have also been recorded in other Baltic states. The goal is to provoke tension in society and undermine trust in state institutions and NATO.

- emphasize the CPD.

They add that Moscow practiced similar scenarios in 2014, when the so-called people's republics in Ukraine were promoted: initially, it was presented as an "internal protest," and later became a cover for military aggression.

"Therefore, such information operations must be taken as seriously as possible. Lithuania is already responding to these challenges at the level of security structures. At the same time, such campaigns require systemic countermeasures - from coordination between state bodies to increasing media literacy in society," the CPD summarizes.

Recall

In November 2025, Lithuania experienced 325 hostile information influences, almost twice the norm, with 47% of attacks related to military topics. At the same time, physical hybrid threats are recorded, including the launch of weather balloons from Belarus that violate Lithuanian airspace.
