The Portugal national team failed to overcome DR Congo in the first round match of Group K within the 2026 FIFA World Cup, UNN reports.
Details
The Group K clash at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, between Portugal and DR Congo, began with a quick goal for the Portuguese in the 6th minute. Pedro Neto delivered a cross from the flank, and João Neves sent the ball into the net.
Notably, during the goal, cameras caught the parents of Diogo Jota in the stands, who passed away last summer in a car accident.
In first-half stoppage time, Yoane Wissa leveled the score for his national team, heading the ball into the net following a cross from Arthur Masuaku.
It should be noted that Wissa's goal was the first ever scored by Congo at a World Cup, as this is the team's first tournament in history. Furthermore, given that the match ended in a 1-1 draw, these are the first points for Congo in World Cup history.
Portugal will play their next match against Uzbekistan on June 23, while Congo will face Colombia on June 24.
