Ukrainian scientists reported on meteorological records at Vernadsky and the effects of climate change in the Antarctic at the JOD28

At COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference, Ukrainian scientists spoke about climate anomalies recorded at the Akademik Vernadsky station, changing climate conditions in the Antarctic and their impact on the planet as a whole. This was reported by the National Antarctic Research Center, according to UNN.

Today, Antarctic researchers spoke at a platform dedicated to informing the international community about the scale of environmental damage caused by Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.

They reported that since July of this year, meteorologists at Vernadsky have recorded the highest air temperature (+8.7°C) for all years of observation. This confirms the conclusion of a new climate report by the UN World Meteorological Organization, namely that 2023 will be the warmest year on record.

At the same time, the lowest air temperature is only -13.8°C.

In addition, according to the results of the Antarctic winter of 2023, polar explorers recorded that there was little floating ice in the Vernadsky Sea, and no stable ice cover, which usually "binds" the sea around the island during this period, was formed at all.

Scientists have already noted the impact of this situation on the life of animals in the station area. For example, Weddell seals had problems with childbearing, and heat-loving sub-Antarctic penguins, on the contrary, are taking over more and more nesting areas.

Therefore, at COP28, it was noted that it is necessary to intensify the efforts of all countries to prevent and mitigate the effects of climate change.
