Two earthquakes occurred near Crete within a few hours

Two powerful earthquakes struck areas of the Greek island of Crete within a few hours on Friday, April 24. This was reported by Ekathimerini, writes UNN.

Details

The National Observatory of Athens Geodynamic Institute recorded the first earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 in the morning. It occurred approximately 23 kilometers south-southwest of Lasithi at a depth of 9.7 kilometers. No casualties or damage were reported as a result of this natural disaster.

Just a few hours later, the Observatory confirmed a second earthquake 18 kilometers south of Lasithi at a depth of 5.7 kilometers. No reports of casualties or damage were received either.

Seismologist Akis Tselentis said that seismic activity is expected after months of increased minor tremors in the area.

He noted that the shallow depth could cause smaller aftershocks in the coming days, but stressed that a stronger earthquake is "unlikely."

Tselentis urged residents to observe basic safety measures, check old buildings for damage, and avoid swimming for the next few days, warning that even small sea waves about half a meter high could pose a danger, especially to children.
