Kyiv • UNN
The European Commission is considering options for additional duties on grain imports from Russia and the Russian Federation, as well as seeking a balance in supporting Ukraine's economy and imposing protective barriers on a certain group of Ukrainian goods.
The European Commission may consider imposing additional duties on grain imports from Russia and Belarus. The details will be announced after the relevant decisions are made. Also, the EU is looking for a balance to maintain support for Ukraine's economy, but will introduce protective barriers for certain Ukrainian goods.
This is reported by UNN with reference to a briefing by the European Commission.
When asked by a journalist about specific data and details of the introduction, European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said that "the Commission will announce when the proposals are adopted" and the dates of the introduction (tariff, duty amount) on Russian grain will be announced. So far, this has not been established.
The briefing also addressed new positions on the EU's trade relations with Ukraine and new rules set forth in the proposed draft association agreement.
Olof Gill, spokesperson for the European Commission on Trade Affairs, noted that "the Commission's position on the extension of autonomous trade measures to Ukraine is very interesting.
According to the official, the EC is looking for an approach to the Ukrainian economy.
We are trying to find the right balance between maintaining our strong support for the Ukrainian economy - for as long as it takes - and introducing safeguard measures for certain groups of agri-food products that we believe are based on market data and need more protection.

On the eve of crucial trade talks between Ukraine and the EU, Poland and France have agreed to restrict imports of Ukrainian agricultural products. This could potentially cost Ukraine €1.2 billion in trade revenues.
UNN also reported that the EU is preparing to impose duties of 95 euros per ton on grain imports from Russia and Belarus, as well as duties on oilseeds and their products, to reassure farmers and some member states amid concerns that cheaper imports are undermining domestic markets.
