The shortlist for the 2025 International Booker Prize has been announced. The list includes 5 novels and a collection of short stories, the authors of which are first-time nominees.

The jury of the most influential award in the field of translated fiction has selected six nominees - five novels and one collection of stories, all authors are on the shortlist for the first time. This is reported on The booker prizes website, writes UNN.
The 2025 International Booker Prize has announced a shortlist of six books - five novels and one collection of short stories:
- "On the Calculation of Volume I", Solvej Balle, translated from Danish to English by Barbara J. Haveland;
- "Small Boat", Vincent Delecroix, translated from French to English by Helen Stevenson;
- "Under the Eye of the Great Bird", Hiromi Kawakami, translated from Japanese to English by Asa Yoned;
- "Excellence", Vincenzo Latronico, translated from Italian to English by Sophie Hughes;
- "Heart Lamp", Banu Mushtaq, translated from Kannada to English by Deepa Bhasti.
- "Leopard Skin Hat", Ann Serre, translated from French to English by Mark Hutchinson.

It is noted that this year the jury is headed by the author, Booker Prize laureate Max Porter. The jury also includes prize-winning poet, director and photographer Caleb Femi; writer and director of Wasafiri Publishing Sana Goyal; author and translator, International Booker Prize nominee Anton Hur; and renowned singer-songwriter Beth Orton.
The judges selected six nominees from 154 books submitted by publishers – the largest number since the prize was established in its current format in 2016.
The award recognizes the vital work of translators. The £50,000 prize is split equally: £25,000 to the author and £25,000 to the translator (or split equally between multiple translators). In addition, there is a prize of £5,000 for each work on the shortlist: half to the author, half to the translator.
The winner of the 2025 International Booker Prize will be announced at a ceremony at Tate Modern, London, on Tuesday, May 20.
This year, all six authors made the shortlist for the first time, and three of them with debut English-language publications. The works are translated from five original languages, including Kannada, which happened for the first time
