According to preliminary data, the epicenter of the earthquake in Venezuela was located near the city of Morón, and the hypocenter lay at a depth of about 10 km. Several injuries are reported, as well as partial destruction of at least several residential high-rise buildings. After the tremors, a tsunami warning was issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Almost simultaneously, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 occurred off the coast of Japan's Iwate Prefecture. Tremors were recorded in the Pacific Ocean, after which Japanese authorities declared a tsunami threat and began monitoring possible consequences of the natural disaster.
