Details
According to the information, the peak of its activity is expected from November 16 to 18, when the number of meteors will be maximum.
The Leonids are formed by the remnants of the Tempel-Tuttle comet, whose particles, when they enter the Earth's atmosphere, create an unforgettable spectacle in the autumn sky. The name of the shower is associated with the constellation Leo, from which meteors seem to "fly out".
The Leonids are characterized by high speeds of up to 71 km/s, and usually up to 15 meteors can be seen per hour. Once every 33 years, when a comet approaches the Earth, the stream becomes extremely intense, sometimes turning into a "meteor storm.
The last such phenomenon was observed in 2001, and it remains one of the most impressive events in the world of astronomy.
