KNU professor's pro-Russian remarks: university initiates proceedings

The Kyiv National University has initiated proceedings against Professor Mykyta Vasylenko over his pro-Russian statements. The Ethics Commission will analyze the situation and make appropriate decisions in accordance with the law.

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv has responded to the scandal surrounding Mykyta Vasylenko, a professor at the Institute of Journalism, UNN reports.

In connection with the public outcry over the statements and public activities of Mykyta Vasylenko, a professor at the Institute of Journalism, the university's official website reported the following:

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv strictly adheres to the principles of academic integrity, freedom of expression and respect for human rights.

At the same time, it condemns any actions that may discredit the University, damage its reputation or contradict the national interests of Ukraine.

The university received official appeals from the Student Parliament of the Institute  of Journalism and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine with a request to assess the actions of Professor Mykyta Vasylenko.

All appeals are duly registered and submitted to the relevant University authorities for consideration.

In order to study the situation in detail, the Rector of the University appealed to the Chairman of the Academic Council of the KNU, who by his decision instructed the Standing Committee of the Academic Council on Ethics to conduct a thorough analysis of the facts set forth in the appeals, taking into account the provisions of the Law of Ukraine “On Education”, “On Higher Education”, the University Charter, and the Code of Ethics of the university community.

Based on the results of the commission's work, appropriate decisions will be made that will comply with the current legislation and internal regulations of the University.

The decision will be publicly communicated to all stakeholders.

The student parliament of the Institute of Journalism of the National University of Kyiv refused to cooperate with the administration until Professor Vasylenko was dismissed. The reason was his pro-Russian and sexist statements about peacekeepers and Ukrainian women.
