Hungary blocks EU financial aid package for Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says he has vetoed a €50 billion multi-year aid package for Ukraine, UNN reports.

Night shift summary: veto on additional money for Ukraine, veto on revision of MFF (EU's multiannual budget - ed.). We will return to this issue next year in the European Council after appropriate preparation,

Orban wrote on the social network X.

According to Reuters, EU leaders wrapped up talks on the financial package, which requires the unanimity of 27 EU leaders, early Friday morning and said they would try again in January, expressing some optimism that a deal could be struck then.

Orban reportedly argued that Ukraine should not receive such large sums from the EU budget because it is not part of the bloc. Other leaders have assured Kyiv that they will channel aid to Ukraine outside the EU budget if Budapest continues to block.

On December 14 , the European Council approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
