Germany has a record high level of arms exports: one third goes to Ukraine

Germany's arms exports in 2023 set a new record of €11.71 billion, with significant assistance to Ukraine and sales to EU countries, NATO and allies.
The German government has set a new record for arms exports in 2023 by authorizing arms sales worth at least 11.71 billion euros. This is stated in the response of the Ministry of Economy to a request from a Bundestag member Tagesschau reports, UNN reports.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the previous record set in 2021 - €9.35 billion - was already exceeded by 25% in mid-December.
The data in the document relates to the period from January 1 to December 12, 2023, during which time the government coalition approved the export of weapons worth 6.15 billion euros and other military products worth 5.67 billion euros.
Almost 90% of the total volume was destined for EU and NATO countries, Ukraine, and some other allied countries, such as Japan, Australia, and South Korea.
In particular, more than third of the approved exports - 4.15 billion euros - are for aid to Ukraine.

The largest importers of German weapons after Ukraine were:
- Norway (EUR 1.2 billion),
- Hungary (EUR 1.03 billion),
- United Kingdom (EUR 654.9 million),
- (EUR 545.4 million),
- Poland (EUR 327.9 million).
Germany has also approved the export of arms and other military equipment of its own production worth 1.76 billion euros to countries such as Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
