Ukrainian polar explorers have recorded a unique phenomenon - the aurora australis. This can be seen extremely rarely. This was reported by UNN with reference to the National Antarctic Research Center.

Details

It is noted that the southern lights were recorded on the night of August 12, the same time as the northern lights could be observed in some regions of Ukraine.

Scientists explain that the aurora borealis is extremely rare for several reasons. First, this area is located quite far from the Earth's south magnetic pole. Secondly, it is constantly very cloudy.

In order for the glow to be visible near Vernadsky, there must be strong perturbations of the Earth's magnetic field. This happens infrequently. We use instruments to record such events at our geomagnetic observatory - by the way, it is now one of the best in the entire Antarctic. However, it was a great success to see the aurora with my own eyes and capture it in a photo, and it happened for the first time in my eight winters. Because most of the time, when the instruments show significant changes in the magnetic field, we either have cloudy skies or summertime, when it is light almost all the time

- Yuri Otruba, geophysicist of the 29th UAE, noted .

Scientist of the 29th UAE Anna Soina noted that, at first glance, it looked like a light white haze with a slight pink tint. However, thanks to the photo, the polar explorers were able to fully examine the unique phenomenon.

When we took a picture of this haze, we realized that it was the glow, green and purple colors appeared in the photo

- adds the geophysicist.

Recall

On the night of August 13, 2024, the aurora borealis was seen over Dnipro and other regions of Ukraine. This rare optical phenomenon occurs in the upper atmosphere under the influence of charged particles.
