EU aims to convince Hungary to finance 50 billion euros of aid to Ukraine

The European Union at a summit later this week aims to convince resisting Hungary of a proposed 50 billion euro aid program for Ukraine to send a clear message to Russia, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a German government official, UNN reported.

At a briefing in Berlin, the official said that all but one of the 27 countries in the bloc supported the Ukraine Facility program.

"Our clear objective is to convince that state that the Ukraine Facility is the right instrument to demonstrate our unity and send a clear message to Russia, and to support the efforts of US President (Joe) Biden to mobilize further necessary support," the official said.

Asked if there was a plan B, the official said: "We are relying on plan A."

As a reminder,

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently demanded that no decisions be made at the EU summit in December on the start of membership talks with Ukraine and on budget amendments that include 50 billion euros for economic support for Ukraine.

Orban, who has maintained ties with Moscow even though the EU has imposed sanctions on Russia over its war in Ukraine, is at odds with the European Commission, according to Reuters.
