russian losses in manpower during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine range from 462 to 728 thousand soldiers as of mid-June 2024. This is significantly higher than the number of troops involved in February 2022.

During the full-scale invasion, russia could have lost between 462,000 and 728,000 soldiers, if counted as of mid-June. And this number of soldiers is significantly higher than the number of soldiers russia had at the beginning of the invasion in February 2022. UNN writes about this with reference to The Economist.

Details

The latest reports on the number of russian military deaths, published in opposition Russian media by July 5, show that the number of deaths in the russian army has exceeded 100,000. As of June 21, the figures range from 106,000 to 140,000, depending on the source of the estimates.

The data is based on an analysis of hereditary records, obituaries on social media and other media. It is important to note that these figures are based on trends since February 6, as access to official records has been limited. These figures are in line with other estimates: French official sources put the death toll at 150,000  as of May, while BBC russia indicates that at least 113,000 russians had died as of June.

French and British official sources also indicate that by May, about 500,000 Russians could have been seriously wounded or killed.

The estimates of the opposition russian media outlets Mediazona and Medusa can also be shown by week. Their data show noticeable spikes in russian losses during Ukraine's counteroffensive in the summer of 2023 and after the battles for Avdiivka and Chasiv Yar.

The Economist notes that these figures do not take into account Ukrainians mobilized by russia from the occupied territories, as well as Russian soldiers who were seriously injured and cannot return to service.

The newspaper writes that according to rough estimates based on leaked information from the US Defense Department, for every russian soldier killed, there are about 3-4 wounded. This suggests that by mid-June, russia could have lost between 462,000 and 728,000 soldiers, which is significantly more than the initial number of troops that took part in the February 2022 invasion.

Add

The highest number of deaths is observed among people aged 35 to 39, of whom about 27,000 were reportedly killed between February 2022 and June 2024.

At the same time, in terms of percentage of the russian male population, the largest losses occurred among the 45-49 age group. The latest data show that approximately 2% of Russian men aged 20 to 50 have been killed or seriously wounded in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war.

According to The Economist, the number of russians killed in the war in Ukraine since 2022 has exceeded the total number of victims in all of Russia's wars since World War II.

However, according to Western officials and analysts, the large losses are unlikely to seriously affect russia's workforce in the short to medium term. According to the New York Times, russia can recruit between 25,000 and 30,000 soldiers every month.

Recall

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the losses of the russian occupiers since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine have already reached about  550990 people, 8155 tanks and hundreds of pieces of military equipment.
