According to the broadcaster, Burnham's candidacy was supported by 349 Labour MPs in the House of Commons. To participate in the party leadership election, it was necessary to secure the support of at least 81 parliamentarians out of the 403 faction members. Because of this, no other contender can mathematically achieve the required number of votes, although the nomination period has not yet ended.
Officially, Andy Burnham is to be elected leader of the Labour Party on July 17. After that, the current Prime Minister Keir Starmer will request the King for his resignation, and the monarch will task Burnham with forming a new government.
It is expected that because July 17 falls on a Friday, Andy Burnham will officially assume the position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, July 20.
