Belgium will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months from January 1, 2024. The country's main slogan is "Protect, strengthen, prepare".
"Protect" means guaranteeing the security and well-being of Europeans. This includes the defense of democratic values, the rule of law and unity, including support for Ukraine, the statement said.
"Strengthen" means increasing the EU's competitiveness on the global stage, which emphasizes the importance of consolidating European unity and solidarity to counter internal and external challenges.
"We have an urgent need to increase the EU's global competitiveness while addressing the challenges of a green, digital and equitable economic transition," said Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Kroo.
But ultimately, "getting ready" means the need to reform the EU to cope with future challenges and to prepare for future enlargement.
