The White House plans to hold a new correspondents' dinner in Washington on July 24 after this year's event in April was interrupted by a shooting. This was reported by the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA), according to Reuters, UNN reports.
Details
The annual dinner, which traditionally brings together journalists, politicians, and representatives of the U.S. administration, will take place in a smaller format this time. The previous event in late April was disrupted after an armed man broke through a checkpoint and opened fire near the hall where the dinner was being held.
At that time, about 2,500 people were in the building, including U.S. President Donald Trump. The suspect in the attack was charged, among other things, with the attempted assassination of the president.
Trump confirmed participation
"This event is a statement that violence has no place in American society, and that a free press will not be intimidated into silence,"
The U.S. President stated that he will participate in the new event. The WHCA emphasized that holding the dinner will be a demonstration of support for freedom of speech and journalistic activity.
