US to allocate $100 million for repair of Chornobyl NPP confinement after Russian drone damage – Shmyhal

The United States will provide $100 million for the restoration of the Chornobyl NPP confinement damaged by a Russian drone. The total funding requirement reaches 500 million euros.

The United States will provide $100 million for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged as a result of a Russian drone attack. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, as reported by UNN.

According to him, the issue of financing the repairs was discussed during the International Chornobyl Conference together with international partners.

"As of today, it is about 500 million euros," the Minister noted, speaking about the total funding needed for the restoration of the confinement.

He thanked the US Department of State, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, the American delegation that worked in Kyiv, as well as the entire US administration for their support.

According to the head of the Ministry of Energy, Washington's contribution will be an important element in strengthening radiation safety not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe.

As a reminder 

The EBRD will allocate 30 million euros for the first stage of the Chornobyl NPP confinement restoration. The funds will be directed toward damage assessment, design, and equipment procurement.
