The source said that U.S. forces in the Middle East are taking “necessary measures” to increase combat readiness and protect U.S. and allied troops from any threats from Iran or Iranian-backed militias.
How many planes to send is still under discussion, as are final approvals from senior officials, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Officials have said they are seeking to calibrate the U.S. response to send enough aircraft of the right types to help protect Israel as quickly as possible without appearing to escalate the conflict
The Pentagon spokeswoman said that the United States could send additional troops to use any additional capabilities, and also said that Austin had a conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, in which he promised to help Israel defend itself.
In addition to dozens of ground-based combat aircraft, the Pentagon has already deployed more than a dozen warships to the region.
