U.S. embassy staff in Baghdad "suffered multiple drone attacks by an Iraqi terrorist group near Baghdad International Airport" on Wednesday. A State Department official reported this on Friday, according to UNN, citing CNN.
The official did not specify which group was believed to be responsible for the attack. He noted that "all personnel are safe."
The publication notes that since the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran, numerous attacks have been carried out against American personnel and facilities in Iraq by pro-Iranian groups. However, Wednesday's incident takes on additional significance as it occurred on the first full day of a truce agreed upon between the US and Iran.
"We expressed our strong condemnation to the Iraqi government and called for a full investigation and accountability for those responsible," the official said on Friday.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy stated in a security alert that "Iraqi terrorist groups supported by Iran carried out several drone attacks near the Diplomatic Support Center and Baghdad International Airport."
On Thursday, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau summoned Iraq's Ambassador to the U.S., Nizar Khirullah, to "express the U.S. government's strong condemnation of the egregious terrorist attacks committed from Iraqi territory against American diplomatic personnel and facilities, including the ambush of American diplomats in Baghdad on April 8," the report said.
