Turkey has announced that it is opening a Yayladagi checkpoint on the border with Syria so that millions of Syrian migrants it accepts can safely and voluntarily return to their homeland. This was stated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reports Reuters, writes UNN.

The Yayladagi checkpoint, located on the northwestern border of Syria, has been closed since 2013 due to fighting.

We are opening the Yayladagi border crossing point to prevent any congestion and facilitate traffic

Erdogan said.

"We will also manage the process of voluntary return of migrants," the Turkish president added.

Earlier on Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Ankara will work on the safe and voluntary return home of Syrian migrants it accepts.

Turkey, a NATO member, accepts about 3 million Syrian migrants and refugees, making it the country that has sheltered the most Syrian citizens fleeing the Civil War.

Turkey also controls territories in northern Syria after several cross-border incursions to conduct operations against Syrian Kurds.
