On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump granted a key permit for the construction of a major new oil pipeline from Canada to the U.S., dubbed "Keystone Light" due to its similarity to the controversial project blocked by the Joe Biden administration, UNN reports, citing AP.

The publication notes that the 1-meter-wide Bridger Pipeline Expansion will allow for the transportation of up to 550,000 barrels (87,400 cubic meters) of oil per day from Canada through Montana and Wyoming, where it will connect with another pipeline.

Additional environmental permits at the state and federal levels are required before construction of the pipeline can begin, with work expected to start next year. Environmentalists hope to stop the project over fears that the pipeline could fail and lead to an oil spill.
At its peak, the 1,050-kilometer pipeline will transport two-thirds less oil than the more famous Keystone XL pipeline, which was partially built before President Joe Biden, citing climate change, revoked its construction permit on his inauguration day in 2021.
