Aloe, basil, lavender, and other plants are believed to protect the home and bring good luck and prosperity. There is no scientific evidence for these properties.

Houseplants can make a home cozier, but in folk traditions some of them were assigned a much more special role. UNN explains more about which plants earned a reputation as natural protectors and which superstitions are associated with them.

Aloe vera

In various cultures, this plant was valued not only for its medicinal properties. The Indigenous peoples of the Americas regarded aloe with particular reverence and even called it the "heavenly staff." Over time, many protective beliefs about the plant emerged.

It was believed that aloe in the home helped ward off troubles and protected residents from accidents; the plant was also often placed above the entrance to a home as a symbol of good luck and a barrier against negative influences. In areas with a warm climate, aloe was also planted near houses in the hope of protecting them from evil spirits. Aloe also has special significance as a symbol of domestic comfort and prosperity. Its presence in the yard or near the entrance was associated with the homeowners’ desire to protect their family from troubles. Such customs were passed down from generation to generation, reinforcing belief in the plant’s protective power.

Basil

Basil is known primarily as an aromatic seasoning, but in folk traditions its significance extends far beyond cooking. The plant is believed to be capable of creating a favorable atmosphere in the home and repelling negative influences. According to popular beliefs, having basil in the house can help get rid of a bad mood and also attract love and passion. To achieve this, it is enough to grow basil at home. In addition, the location of the pot is also considered important; in particular, people believe that the northern, eastern, or southeastern parts of the home are supposedly best suited for basil.

Lavender

Lavender’s pleasant aroma has made it a popular garden plant, but in folk beliefs it is also associated with purity, love, devotion, and good luck. Lavender held a special place in ancient rituals, when it was believed to be thrown into bonfires during the celebration of St. John’s Day to drive away evil spirits and misfortune. The plant was also credited with another unusual property: superstitious people believed that its scent could help them see ghosts. However, the symbolism of lavender changed during different historical periods; for example, in the Victorian tradition, these flowers were associated with distrust.

Eucalyptus

In folk beliefs, eucalyptus is associated with prosperity and renewed strength; it is even called a kind of magnet for financial luck, as the plant supposedly helps attract abundance, promotes normal sleep, and restores energy. Its reputation as a protector of the home is no less important. According to popular beliefs, eucalyptus does not allow negative influences to enter the house and helps ward off envy and ill wishes.

Cactus

Ambiguous beliefs have also developed around this plant. In folk beliefs, cactus spines symbolize powerful energy that can affect the surrounding atmosphere. It was believed that a plant placed directly beside a person, for example on a desk, could create tension and provoke irritability. At the same time, the cactus was also credited with protective properties. In particular, in the right location it could supposedly ward off external aggression, the evil eye, and ill wishes. That is why it was placed near a window, closer to the front door, or on a balcony.

Nettle

In folk tradition, the common nettle appears not simply as a wild plant but as a means of countering unwanted magical influences. Beliefs about its special properties spread from Northern Europe and Asia, where it was credited with the ability to destroy curses and remove spells. Incidentally, this is precisely why nettles were used in the creation of protective amulets.

In addition, British accounts also mentioned other unusual properties of the plant. For example, there was a belief that placing a nettle leaf in one’s mouth could relieve toothache. Because of this, nettles were often regarded as a plant worth keeping close at hand for protection against evil forces. It was also believed that even the day on which nettles were gathered mattered; in particular, nettles picked on a Saturday were supposedly deprived of their healing properties.

Sage

Sage has long been associated with wisdom, strength, and healing. In ancient Greek mythology, this plant was considered particularly special, and its properties were even attributed to divine origins. It was also believed to have a positive effect on memory.

A separate tradition concerns the use of sage to cleanse the home. Superstitious people  burned it, believing that the smoke helped dispel negative influences and protect the domestic space. The plant was also associated with a medieval belief in longevity: supposedly, daily consumption of sage could bring a person closer to immortality.

St. John’s wort

In folk legends, St. John’s wort has a reputation as a plant that helps ward off danger. Its sprigs were kept in homes, while dried parts could be placed between the pages of books. In this way, the plant was used as a kind of household talisman.

Particular attention was paid to the time of gathering. It was believed that St. John’s wort collected on the eve of summer acquired extraordinary protective power and could drive away evil spirits, demons, and even gloomy thoughts. To protect the home, the plant was placed near windows and doors, while for personal protection it was carried in a pocket.

Thyme

In many folk traditions, thyme is associated with good luck and confidence. It is considered a plant that can contribute to success in various areas of life. In France, for example, there was an interesting tradition of planting thyme in the garden to attract fairies. Those seeking professional advancement were advised to keep the plant at their workplace. It was believed that thyme helped strengthen self-confidence, improve health, and even banish nightmares.

Tradescantia

In folk beliefs, this plant is assigned an unusual function: it supposedly can signal an unfavorable atmosphere in the home. If its leaves begin to turn yellow and fall, superstitious  people interpreted this as a sign of negative influence. If changing the conditions and care did not help, however, the cause was associated not with the location of the pot but with the overall atmosphere in the home. In addition, tradescantia is believed to protect its owners from gossip, envy, and the evil eye, and this plant has also been associated with protection against respiratory illnesses.

Cayenne pepper

In Central and South America, Indigenous peoples cultivated cayenne pepper, using it as a seasoning and in folk medicine; over time, however, it also became part of protective traditions. According to beliefs, this hot red pepper, like salt, can create a kind of barrier against evil. It was scattered near the entrance or in certain places around the house to prevent unwanted influence, or hung by a thread near the door to protect the home and prosperity. Pepper was also added to mixtures of herbs used to make talismans.

Protective plants are part of ancient folk beliefs in which every flower or herb has its own symbolic meaning. Some are credited with protecting against envy and curses, while others  are believed to attract good luck, love, or prosperity. There is no scientific evidence that plants can absorb negative energy or drive away evil spirits, but the traditions associated with them continue to this day.
