Foreign policy representatives of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) have stated they are ready to consider Vladimir Putin's proposal to involve former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Spiegel, according to UNN.
Details
The idea has sparked controversy in German politics. The German federal government called the Kremlin's proposal "fictitious" and questioned its seriousness.
At the same time, the SPD parliamentary group's foreign policy spokesperson, Adis Ahmetović, told Spiegel that any initiative must be "seriously vetted" in terms of its credibility. According to him, Europe must not be completely excluded from the negotiation process regarding Ukraine.
No unity in Germany regarding Schröder's role
Some German politicians have spoken out sharply against such a scenario due to Schröder's long-standing ties with the Kremlin and Russian energy companies.
Former chairman of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Roth, stated that Putin's proposal is a "maneuver" and emphasized that a person considered close to the Russian president cannot be a mediator.
After the military parade in Moscow, Putin stated that among European politicians, it is Schröder whom he would like to see as a mediator in possible negotiations regarding the war against Ukraine.
As a reminder
On May 9, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that, in his opinion, the war between Russia and Ukraine is "coming to an end."
The dictator also expressed readiness to discuss new security arrangements in Europe. According to him, he considers former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder to be the best partner for such negotiations.
