The deputies point out that the European Parliament adopted a resolution of November 28, 2024 on strengthening the democratic crisis in Georgia after the recent parliamentary elections and alleged electoral fraud. The document calls on the EU to introduce a comprehensive package of personal sanctions in response to massive election violations that took place before and during the October 2024 parliamentary elections.
In particular, the European Parliament calls on the EU and its member states to impose personal sanctions on Georgian officials and political leaders responsible for the rollback from democracy, violations of electoral laws and standards, administrative abuses and misuse of state institutions, such as prime minister Irakli Kobakhiddze, Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party Kakha Kaladze, Speaker of the Georgian parliament Shalva Papuashvili and Chairman of the Georgian Dream party Irakli Garibashvili, and extend these sanctions to judges., who pass politically motivated sentences, " the statement reads.
