On the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Meloni stated that Italy has always fulfilled its obligations to NATO and the international community.
"The US has been discussing reducing its presence in Europe for some time; we must strengthen our security and increase our defense capabilities," she said.
"This decision does not depend on me; I personally do not agree with it. Italy has always fulfilled its obligations, always doing so within the framework of NATO, even when our direct interests were not at stake — as in Afghanistan and Iraq," Meloni added.
"I do not consider some of the things that were said about us to be correct," she noted, commenting on Trump's statements regarding the withdrawal of troops from European bases.
The US President accused Italy of insufficient support and stated that Meloni has changed.
As a reminder
The US President is considering troop reductions in Italy and Spain due to NATO's refusal to help in the war against Iran. Trump criticized the allies for their lack of support.
