The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has been temporarily closed to visitors following a Russian attack and a fire in the Dormition Cathedral, the eponymous national reserve reported on social media on Monday, UNN writes.
Due to the massive Russian attack on the night of June 15, as a result of which the National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" suffered significant damage, the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is temporarily closed to visitors
The National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" indicated that "a Shahed hit the altar part of the Dormition Cathedral - the Stephen Side-Altar." The fire, as stated, is being extinguished by SES rescuers.
"In addition, as a result of a repeated strike attempt, the Tower of John Kushnyk — a 17th–18th century defensive structure that is part of the fortification complex of the Upper Lavra — was damaged," the reserve's statement reads.
Currently, emergency rescue operations are reportedly ongoing.
"In order to ensure the safety of people and the preservation of monuments, entry to the territory of the Lavra for visitors is restricted until the completion of these works. The date of reopening will be announced additionally," the reserve reported.
