US Secretary of State Mark Rubio, US Ambassador to Lebanon Michelle Issa, State Department Advisor Michael Needham, Israeli Ambassador Yehiel Leiter, and Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamade are expected to participate. According to media reports, this is the highest-level direct meeting between Israel and Lebanon since 1993. The main topics of the meeting will be three key issues:
- immediate ceasefire and cessation of ground
invasion;
- long-term disarmament of the terrorist group
"Hezbollah";
- signing of a full-fledged peace agreement between the countries.
As a direct consequence of Hezbollah's reckless actions, the governments of Israel and Lebanon are engaged in open, direct, high-level diplomatic negotiations mediated by the United States.
The department added that the talks "will aim to continue dialogue on ensuring the long-term security of Israel's northern border and supporting the Lebanese government's determination to restore full sovereignty over its territory and political life."
Israel is at war with Hezbollah, not with Lebanon, so there is no reason why these two neighbors should not negotiate.
