Opposition protesters in Albania threw Molotov cocktails at the government building and city hall, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama over corruption charges and the release of opposition leader Sali Berisha from house arrest.

On the evening of July 11, opposition protesters threw Molotov cocktails at the Albanian government building and city hall, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama of corruption and demanding his resignation. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

Thousands of opposition protesters gathered in front of Rama's office, and later at the office of the mayor of Tirana, who is also a representative of the prime minister's Socialist Party.

The police did not intervene, but extinguished the fire from Molotov cocktails. No injuries were reported.

The protesters also demanded the release of opposition leader Sali Berisha, who was held under house arrest and investigated for corruption during his tenure as prime minister in 2005-2013.

Berisha denies the offense, accusing Rama of political revenge aimed at silencing his opponents. Rama has not provided an explanation, but has repeatedly denied the accusation. The prosecutor's office has not yet decided whether to file formal charges against Berisha.

Albania is the only country in Europe where the leader of the opposition is under political arrest without any facts, evidence or documents. Edi Rama wants an Albania without Albanians, without opposition and without justice,

- Berisha said via video link from his house arrest.

Berisha called on supporters to engage in civil disobedience to force the government to hold early elections.

Rama has been in power since 2013 and has won all parliamentary and local elections since then.
