In Cancun, a two-hour drive from Tulum, people stock up on food and other essentials for several days, and hotels have boarded up their windows.

The storm is forecast to weaken as it moves northwest across the Yucatan Peninsula, but will gain strength again as it leaves the Gulf of Mexico and then hits the eastern state of Tamaulipas on the border with Texas in the United States.
