British troops have discovered hidden Russian sensors in the seas around Great Britain, which were probably used to spy on British nuclear submarines.

This was reported by the Telegraph, writes UNN.

Details

British troops discovered this after several of the sensors were washed ashore and discovered by the Royal Navy. They are seen as a potential threat to national security.

According to the media, the situation was not made public before, but The Sunday Times reported that Moscow was trying to collect intelligence about four British Vanguard submarines equipped with nuclear missiles.

At least one of the submarines is at sea as part of Britain's permanent naval deterrent force. Moscow has a fleet of specialized submarines that are reportedly better equipped than the UK and its NATO allies, both in terms of seabed warfare and espionage.

Throughout the conflict with Ukraine, Russia has stepped up surveillance and sabotage of underwater Internet connections, energy pipelines and military cables that are crucial to the West. In 15 months, at least 11 Internet cables in the Baltic Sea were damaged, in part because ships were dragging anchors along the bottom.

The Nordic Warden response system, which uses artificial intelligence to track the location of the Russian shadow fleet, was launched by the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force after a cable between Estonia and Finland was damaged in December.

A senior British military official added:

There should be no doubt that there is a war raging in the Atlantic. It's a cat-and-mouse game that has been going on since the end of the Cold War and is now escalating again. We are seeing phenomenal activity by Russia

A Ministry of Defense spokesman said: "We are committed to increasing the security of critical maritime infrastructure."

Together with our NATO allies and the Joint Expeditionary Force, we are stepping up our response to ensure that Russian ships and aircraft cannot operate covertly near the UK or near NATO territory, using new technologies such as artificial intelligence and coordinating patrols with our allies.

"And our nuclear deterrent forces, which are constantly operating at sea, continue to patrol the world's oceans unnoticed, as they have done for 56 years," he added.
